On the west wall of the gymnasium building of Roberto Clemente High School, Aren’t I a Womyn?, celebrates the contributions of Third World women and was inspired by the poetry and words of Julia de Burgos, a Puerto Rican poet, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, a 17th century Mexican nun and poet, and Sojourner Truth, an African- American liberationist. Rather than showing the women themselves, their large eyes gaze back at the viewer. The powerful words of Julia de Burgos, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, and Sojourner Truth challenging gender inequities are found throughout the mural.
