A new initiative aimed at supporting small businesses along Chicago’s iconic Puerto Rican corridor wrapped up a successful pilot this December and is now gearing up for an expanded launch in the new year. The Bandera Bandera Passport, organized by Dunosis LLC under the leadership of Wesley Ordonez and his team, brought together local businesses and residents in a creative effort to drive foot traffic, celebrate culture, and encourage community shopping during the holiday season.

Taking place during the first weeks of December along Division Street in Paseo Boricua, between California and Western Avenues, the pilot included 13 participating businesses. The name Bandera Bandera pays homage to the two towering steel Puerto Rican flags that mark the corridor, a symbol easily recognized by community businesses and visitors. Participants could pick up a physical passport at any participating location and collect stickers by making purchases at each business. Completing the passport unlocked a final reward, turning everyday shopping into a shared neighborhood experience.

The pilot received strong feedback from both business owners and participants, with many highlighting increased visibility, new customers, and a sense of connection across the corridor. Interest was high enough that the program was extended to give more people time to participate. Two participants, a husband and wife, successfully completed the passport within the allotted time and claimed the grand prize: customized hoodies created specifically for the initiative.

Building on that momentum, organizers are now preparing a second and expanded version of the Bandera Bandera Passport, set to launch in mid-January and run for several months. The new phase introduces a digital component via a web-based app, allowing participants to track their progress online while maintaining a printed passport option. The updated program will also feature a revamped points and rewards system, offering multiple prizes at different levels, including keychains, beanies, t-shirts, and additional surprise rewards, while maintaining a grand prize for those who visit every participating business.

Dunosis LLC has emphasized that this initiative is meant to grow collaboratively and is open to partnerships with local cultural institutions, as well as community members and businesses interested in strengthening the corridor. Residents are encouraged to take part in the upcoming launch by visiting participating businesses, scanning QR codes posted on-site, or accessing the app once it becomes available, supporting local commerce while helping shape a program designed by and for the community.
