A contingent of Chicago Puertoย Rican leaders joined over 350 members of the Puerto Rican diaspora inย Orlando, Florida on October 13-14.ย After many months of planning andย negotiation, this unprecedentedย event provided a unique and sorelyย needed space for discussion and debate on issues of great importanceย to the Puerto Rican nation. Theseย issues included Puerto Ricoโs currentย economic and fiscal crisis, healthcare reform, the environment, civilย rights, and the campaign to free Oscar Lรณpez-Rivera.ย More broadly, this gathering inย Orlando signals a growing unityย among members of the Puerto Rican diaspora and growing interestย in the formation of a national Puerto Rican agenda. Indeed, amongย those present were 21 Puerto Ricanย elected officials, including Congress persons Nydia Velรกzquez (NY),ย Luis Gutiรฉrrez (IL), and (via Skype)ย Josรฉ Serrano (NY). Congresspersons Alan Grayson (FL) and Brendan Boyle (PA) were also present inย solidarity. Participation by the localย Puerto Rican population and leadership of Central Florida made itsย presence felt throughout the gathering. In the months to come, Laย Voz will continue to report on newย developments set in motion by thisย historic event.ย La Voz del Paseo Boricua is proudย to reproduce the following articlesย which include one of the openingย statements of the gathering debutย by Josรฉ E. Lรณpez, and an article reproduced from Claridad written byย Enrique Fernรกndez Toledo, formerย senior policy analyst for Congressman Luisย V. Gutiรฉrrez, as well as two otherย pieces on the topics covered in theย Orlando event.
