Community joins Garcia family in remembrance of Nilda Garcia

Nilda Garcia, a beloved member of the Humboldt Park community, passed away on August 9, 2026, at the age of 73. Born December 1, 1952, Nilda was the younger sister of “Papa Pollo,” owner of Papa’s Cache Sabroso, and was a familiar and cherished face to many in the neighborhood. Her connection to the community stretched back many years, first working alongside her brother Johnny “Taco,” who owned the restaurant before Papa’s Cache, and later often lending a hand at Papa’s Cache and supporting the neighborhood and its people however she could. With her vibrant personality, unmistakable fashion sense, and love of music and dancing, Nilda had a way of bringing joy and energy wherever she went.

Above all else, Nilda’s greatest love was her family. She was an amazing and loving sister, a devoted mother to her daughter, Malinda, a proud grandmother to Brianna and Makayla, and a cherished aunt to her many nieces and nephews. She shared more than 40 years with the love of her life, Terry, before his passing in 2024. To Nilda, family truly was everything, and she loved hers deeply. She will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the joy and laughter she brought wherever she went, and the lasting mark she left on both her family and the Humboldt Park community. Her loss is tremendous, and she will be deeply and dearly missed.
