Photographs and article by Jacob Diaz
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, WGN will be running segments celebrating Chicago’s rich Hispanic heritage and the positive impact the culture has had on the community, particularly its youth. Jacob, a former participant in the PRCC’s Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) program, was one of the special guests given the opportunity to share his story, along with Jenise Santiago and Adrian Santiago, VPI co-program directors.
As a participant in the Center’s VPI programs, Jacob was able to grow as a photographer while also giving back to his community by capturing special moments throughout his personal and professional development. Jacob shared how the VPI department has been a pillar of support for him, providing opportunities that allowed him to pursue and further develop his passion for photography.
As an alumnus of Roberto Clemente Community Academy, where he participated in its Radio and TV program, Jacob continues to use his camera to document meaningful moments while staying on a productive path. His journey reflects the importance of continued investment in Chicago’s youth through programs such as My Chi, My Future and other youth-focused initiatives.
Jacob plans to continue developing his skills as a photographer and use what he has learned to give back to a community that has invested in him. His story is a powerful example of how mentorship, opportunity, and cultural pride can help young people turn their passions into meaningful contributions to their communities.
