The Puerto Rican Cultural Center congratulates the Hispanic Information Telecommunications Network (HITN), the leading Spanish-language public media network, and its President and CEO, Michael D. Nieves, on taking home three awards at the 68th Annual New York Emmys on Saturday, October 11, 2025. The prizes highlighted the network’s dedication to delivering high-quality programming that educates, informs, and inspires the Spanish-speaking community. For HITN, a long-time partner of the PRCC, this is the second consecutive Emmy in as many years. Last year, it won for a Human Interest entry titled ā€œRamon and Irmgard.ā€

The Puerto Rican Cultural Center’s Senior Advisor, Luis V. GutiĆ©rrez, was the subject of one of the clips that won an Emmy. GutiĆ©rrez, the former Alderman and Congressman who served 25 years representing the 4th District, was at the forefront of key human and political rights issues over the two-plus decades. Among those issues, as part of Mayor Harold Washington’s City Council, were police brutality, gentrification, LGBT rights and, later, as a Representative, redistricting, the political status of Puerto Rico, the incessant bombing of the island municipality of Vieques, Puerto Rico, for U.S. & NATO War Game practice, freedom for Puerto Rican political prisoners and for over 30 years, until his retirement, as the national spokesperson for immigrants rights at the Federal level. It is that role that the HITN short focuses on. Upon learning of the Emmy Award, Luis said, ā€œI am happy and excited about the Emmy. Not because it was based on me, but the underlying story that in America, people should be judged on the content of their character, not the color of their skin. And in America, we were being judged because of who we are and where we come from, and that’s wrong.ā€

HITN received recognition in the following Spanish-language categories at the 68th New York Emmy Awards:

  • Politics/Government News or Content, Spanish: Puerto Rican Heritage: Luis Vicente GutiĆ©rrez

Today, a new generation of members carries the challenge of adapting to a changing industry while honoring a powerful legacy.
  • Societal Concerns, Short Form Content, Spanish: Voces: JoyDew Foundation (click link to view, or type https://www.hitn.org/hitn-metro/)
The JoyDew Foundation offers hope to families of individuals on the autism spectrum. This story provides an intimate glimpse into the foundation’s efforts, highlighting the dedication of educators and communities to equipping students with the skills necessary to thrive in today’s world.

Michael D. Nieves, President and CEO of HITN, shared, ā€œReceiving these Emmy Awards reflects the dedication, creativity, and hard work of HITN’s entire team. For more than four decades, our mission has been to educate and entertain while highlighting the stories and perspectives that matter most to Hispanic families. We will continue producing culturally resonant content that informs, fosters understanding, and strengthens connections within Hispanic communities nationwide.ā€

The New York Emmy Awards gala honored the finest in television, and HITN’s wins further establish the network as a leader in Spanish-language broadcasting.
