HPH and Ponce Health Sciences University celebrate a landmark affiliation bringing academic medicine, research and innovation into the heart of Chicago’s Puerto Rican community

There was an unmistakable energy in the room Thursday morning at Humboldt Park Health. Elected Officials, Hospital leaders, Physicians, Researchers, Academic Partners, Community Leaders, and friends gathered not simply to witness the affiliation announcement, but to celebrate a momentous milestone 131 years in the making.
On August 6, Humboldt Park Health (HPH) and Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) formally commemorated a historic affiliation that establishes the first academic research presence on the Humboldt Park Health campus in the hospital’s history. But the significance of the occasion extended far beyond the signatures placed on a document. It represented the coming together of healthcare, academia, research, culture and community – and the beginning of an ambitious new chapter for healthcare on Chicago’s West Side.
A Partnership Rooted in Culture and Community
For generations, Humboldt Park Health has served as a healthcare anchor for families throughout the West Side. Now, its affiliation with Ponce Health Sciences University creates new possibilities for medical education, clinical training and research, workforce development, and healthcare innovation – all while remaining grounded in culturally-attuned, dignified care.
That connection to culture was palpable throughout the celebration. Located in the heart of Puerto Rican Town Barrio Borikén, Humboldt Park Health sits within a community whose institutions have spent decades preserving culture, strengthening neighborhoods and advocating for the well-being of Puerto Rican and Latino families.
Humboldt Park Health, Ponce Health Sciences University, the Puerto Rican Cultural Center and the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture collectively contribute to an emerging ecosystem where culture, community, clinical care and academic excellence converge.
For the leaders gathered Thursday, that made the moment especially meaningful.
“This partnership represents more than an institutional agreement – it is an investment in the future of equitable healthcare and innovation,” said José R. Sánchez, President and CEO of Humboldt Park Health. “For more than a century, Humboldt Park Health has served as a trusted healthcare anchor for our community. Today, we are building on that legacy by creating new opportunities for education, innovation and discovery that will directly benefit the patients and families we serve.”
Throughout the morning, there was a sense that those gathered understood they were witnessing something truly transformational. The celebration brought together leaders from both institutions to reflect on what becomes possible when a community hospital and an academic institution unite around a shared purpose.
Richard Blabolil, Chair of Humboldt Park Health’s Board of Trustees reflected on the future of the organization, while Dr. David Lenihan, CEO of Tiber Health Corporation, parent company of Ponce Health Sciences University, spoke to the academic partnership and the opportunities ahead.
Dr. Kenira Thompson, President of the Ponce Medical School Foundation and Ponce Research Institute, underscored the research dimension of the partnership while underscoring the possibilities created when scientific discovery and community health are closely connected.
The significance of the partnership to the surrounding community was further reflected by Dr. José López, Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, whose closing remarks connected the day’s celebration to the larger history and future of Puerto Rican Town, Barrio Borikén.
And then came the moment everyone had gathered to witness: the ceremonial signing of the affiliation agreement. Applause erupted in the room as cameras captured the moment, celebration for the future far greater than what was captured on the pages of an agreement. What was being celebrated could not be contained on the pages of the agreement.
Where Culture and Academic Medicine Meet
The promise of this affiliation is especially powerful because of where it is taking place. Historically, communities experiencing health disparities have not always had academic medicine, clinical research and healthcare innovation embedded within the neighborhoods where people live, work and raise their families. This partnership offers an opportunity to change that narrative.
By establishing an academic presence on Humboldt Park Health’s campus, the community is not simply adjacent to the work, the community can inform the work. Its experiences, cultures, languages, and health needs can become part of the environment in which future healthcare professionals learn, researchers investigate important questions, and clinicians continue providing care.
Advancing health equity holistically reinforces a simple but powerful idea: healthcare excellence and cultural understanding do not compete with one another, they strengthen one another.
131 Years of History – and a New Beginning
Today, Humboldt Park Health and Ponce Health Sciences University stand together at an important intersection – where healthcare meets academia, where research meets lived experience, and where innovation remains deeply rooted in culture and community.
And from the heart of Puerto Rican Town, Barrio Borikén a new chapter in Humboldt Park Health’s 131-year story has officially begun.
